This position is located in the VA Medical Center's (MC), Patient Care Service (PCS) under the direct supervision of a Nurse Manager. The incumbent provides continuous cardiac surveillance, interpretation and reporting of monitor and telemetry tracing of patients within (PCS). They are expected to recognize changes in patient's condition and be astute in assessing the need for intervention which may be of an emergent nature requiring immediate attention. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Efficiently monitor, interpret and document cardiac rhythms. Alert nursing and physician of all significant changes to patients' cardiac rhythm activity. Document to EMR to include all communications on cardiac rhythm changes. Efficiently admit and discharge patient within the telemetry monitoring system. Ability to troubleshooting of cardiac monitors including changing batteries when needed, changing electrodes and cardiac monitor cable wires to achieve maximum picture quality of patient's cardiac rhythms. Ability to notify BioMed for any issues if needed. Properly clean cardiac monitoring equipment before and after patient use per Hospital policy. Provide updated, accurate patient hand off for incoming Telemetry Technician at shift change. Education NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree meets the requirements for GS-9. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. OR Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-06 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). ["Major Duties: Admit the patient to the Centralized Telemetry Monitoring system and prepare a telemetry box and record patient information. Places patient information on the telemetry unit monitoring system, completes documentation of telemetry admission information, provides patient instructions for receiving telemetry care. Detects abnormal or changing rate, rhythm, or pattern of conduction directly from oscilloscopic rhythm display, from computer triggered alarms, or from EKG records on computer memory. Monitor for non-invasive blood pressure and continuous pulse oximetry (SP02) alarm events when in use. Promptly validates/invalidates alarm conditions. Establishes and maintains morphologically suitable and noise free EKG signal. Detects need for lead changes by observing accuracy of computer diagnosis and noting clarity of EKG signal at console oscilloscope. Preserves an analyzed six second strip every 8-12 hours (or per protocol) and as needed for rhythm changes. Labels rhythm strip with the patient's name, lead, PR QRS and QT intervals and rhythm interpretation. Monitor patients in lead II or MCL unless specified per protocol or patient specific needs. Notifies appropriate personnel of minor/major/life threatening cardiac rhythm disturbance. Sets alarm limits per policy. Admit/discharge patient in Telemetry monitoring computer system. Gives verbal reports to nursing staff regarding patient EKG rhythm. Completes hand-off communication to oncoming telemetry monitoring staff member. Runs a continuous strip on telemetry patients during emergency situation. Keeps an accurate log of all cardiac arrhythmia per standard operating procedure. Ensures high quality information and visual display of patient's tracing. Cleans telemetry boxes and leads according to the manufacturer's instructions and facility specific infection control procedures prior to telemetry redistribution. Maintains telemetry equipment in working order and reports need for repair. The telemetry monitoring technician will document the issuance and return of the telemetry box in the appropriate record. Reports issues/concerns with the telemetry monitoring system/equipment to the Bio-Medical Engineering department and the Nurse Manager/designee. Maintains BLS and ACLS and remains current with mandatory trainings. Performs or assists RN with personal care such as body and oral hygiene, dressing/undressing, and toileting/elimination ensuring patient privacy at all times. Assist RN in patient care as directed to include but not limited to dressing changes, triage, turning and positioning of patients, enema administration, postmortem care and morgue transfers. Measures and records vital signs in Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) vital signs package and notifies assigned RN or provider, such as temperature (oral and rectal), pulse, respirations, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and pain level. vital signs, weights, intake and output, bladder scans. Monitor one to one observation patients. Answers call lights and communicates patients' needs to assigned RN or Charge Nurse. Work Schedule: 6-12 hour shifts (7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.); 1 eight hours shift (11:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.) with every other weekend rotation.
