The Surgical Technician (ST) is a member of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technician participates with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Individual Occupational Requirement: This position's duties range widely in type and include support duties to medical and health personnel. You must have technician experience which is experience that requires application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the Surgical Technician. GS-7 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Independently set up sterile field appropriately in hospital/surgical setting. Observes surgical maintenance and techniques. Assists Health Professionals with necessary instruments for each surgical case. Identifies surgical specimens, instruments, and procedures. Verifies count of all surgical instruments with accuracy. Performs tests to ensure that surgical equipment meets operational, sterilization, and cleanliness requirements. Utilizes communication to perform tasks with accuracy. OR Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-07 level. To substitute education for experience at this grade level, you must have one (1) full year of graduate education. One (1) full year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full time study. If that information can not be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours well be considered as satisfying the one (1) year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. ["The Surgical Technician performs the following major duties: Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures to include extremely complex procedures independently. Independently sets up sterile field with all necessary items for each procedure. Responsible for vigilant observation of the maintenance of aseptic technique and an environment conducive to the welfare of the surgical patient. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments for the surgeon. Incumbent must be dexterous in \"passing:' instruments to surgeons without compromising principles of aseptic technique and in a manner requiring little or no effort from the surgeon. Incumbent may need to wears X-Ray protective lead attire (up to 20 pounds in weight) for prolonged periods of time.
