This Medical Instrument Technician (GI) position is in Specialty Care services at the White River Junction VA Medical Center, located at the White River Junction, Vermont location. This position is a full-time at 40 per week. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-7 GI Technician (Full Performance Level): (a) Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the duties of the position to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of proper performance of endoscopic equipment and procedures. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: (b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of endoscopic equipment and use in basic and complex endoscopic procedures. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to the GI system, with ability to recognize and report obvious abnormalities during procedures. Ability to assist physician with specialized, complex procedures. Knowledge of universal precautions and disinfection techniques and ability to follow SOP's to clean reusable medical equipment (RME). Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service skills and interpersonal skills with all healthcare professionals to ensure quality and continuity of care. Ability to use basic computer systems and programs to record patient and endoscopic data, adhering to patient privacy and information security policies. Ability to deliver patient care, including vital sign measurements and medication administration. (c) Certification. No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BLS certification. (d) Assignment. This represents the full performance level. Technicians at this level function with minimal instruction, assisting the staff with complex specialized procedures such as ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). They are proficient with GI endoscopic equipment and ensure proper performance of endoscopic equipment; select alternate equipment or adjust equipment settings to accommodate patient needs and produce high quality technique. They collect, process, and label all specimens; train other technicians in basic endoscopic procedures; work in and outside the GI unit offering technician support during emergent and on-call endoscopic cases; and assist the nurse in patient care duties such as obtaining vital signs, dressing and documenting all pertinent information in the patient's records. They inventory and maintain par levels of specialty equipment for the endoscopy unit. Preferred Experience: None beyond the qualification standard. Physical Requirements: The work requires average dexterity of all extremities. The individual will be standing for the majority of working hours, but will also include some bending, walking, lifting, and carrying of items. Work also requires moving and transferring of patients on stretchers and moving heavy endoscopy equipment carts. Work may require heavy lifting of equipment of patients. ["The Medical Instrument Technician (GI) operates highly complex equipment that requires knowledge and proficiency to operate and maintain. The incumbent will serve as medical administrative support and will coordinate all administrative and clinical duties for the delivery of high quality gastroenterology care during tests and procedures. Medical Instrument Technician Gastroenterology (GI) Technicians assist the practitioner in endoscopic procedures, such as esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and endoscopic ultrasound. The technicians ensure proper performance of equipment, set up equipment, and reprocess endoscopic reusable medical equipment (RME). The duties of this occupation include but are not limited to the following: Update, maintain and review clinical logs for sterilization procedures/protocols according to ID and new ASGE and SGNA guidelines. In charge of developing/maintaining QM monitors for infection control and complications in the GI section. In charge of purchasing/ordering new equipment, maintaining supplies and inventories and stocks for equipment. Maintains all records, logs and documentation for equipment ordering. Arranges in-services/meetings with company vendors/representatives for new equipment as needs arise. Performs maintenance of all endoscopes including inspection, leak testing, cleaning. Performs biological monitoring of sterilizer as required by policy. Responsible for setting up and assessing proper functioning of equipment by following manufacturers guidelines for testing prior to procedures. Provides in-service training to all new employees and other hospital personnel regarding the cleaning , maintenance, safety, proper operation and troubleshooting of endoscopic equipment and accessories; maintains associated documentation as appropriate, Coordinate GI Fellowship orientation. Assists physicians with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (EGO, ERCP's, Colonoscopy, Sigmoidoscopy, PEG placement, Paracentesis, Liver Biopsy ) including setting up equipment , assisting with biopsy procurement, snare polypectomy, esophageal/pyloric/colonic dilation, variceal banding, injection and or electrocautery for treatment of bleeding. Provides technical support, assists with post-procedural equipment care, log and transport of lab and pathology specimens. Manually clean and disinfect non-critical reusable equipment and surfaces, dispose of one time-use equipment and trash per facility policy, and restock supplies such as linens, suction equipment, and cleaning products.
