Performs work in a clinical laboratory providing a range of diagnostic functions to include blood-drawing procedures, assisting patients, and specimen processing. Provides assistance of a technical, specialized, or support nature to health and medical personnel in the diagnosis or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions. Supports medical and health care professionals in tests and procedures to diagnose and treat medical conditions. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR): IOR must be satisfied to be further considered for the position. Specialized Experience: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. or Education and Training: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. GS-05 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Adheres to safety, infection control and universal precaution at all the times while drawing blood and working with patients' samples.. Performs standard diagnostic tests or procedures such as venipuncture according to written procedure or directed by the physician or other professional staff. Supports duties such as collecting and labeling specimens for the laboratory. Receives and relays incoming telephone calls and messages; receives verbal requests for add-on tests and verifies specimen availability and accuracy of request. Ensures appropriate handling and timely delivery of specimens to main Laboratory. OR Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-05 level. Four (4) years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. OR Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-05 level. Combination of successfully completed education and experience to meet the total experience requirements. (i.e. 6 months of specialized experience and 3 years of education above the high school level). NOTE: Only education beyond the second year can be used in combination with specialized experience to qualify for this grade. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-05. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
