Department Overview
The pharmacy department at Children's Minnesota is staffed by registered pharmacists and certified pharmacy technicians with specialized training in pediatric pharmacy. Our inpatient pharmacists perform daily rounds with providers and are essential partners in providing state-of-the-art pediatric comprehensive medication management services, pharmacy automation, IV production and compounding services. Children's pharmacists provide medication education, consultation and specialized drug information services, as well as participating in educational and outreach programs. We provide 24-hour inpatient operations services along with 16-hour decentral pharmacist coverage. Our inpatient decentral team includes trained subspecialists in neonatal, pediatric and cardiovascular critical care, including cardiac transplant, pediatric medicine, oncology, neuroscience, emergency medicine (including Level I trauma services) and research. Our pharmacists are also essential partners in the ambulatory setting, providing pediatric pharmacy services for home infusion, retail pharmacy, oncology clinic/infusion center and hemophilia treatment center, as well as medication therapy management (MTM) within our primary and specialty care clinics. We are committed to training the next generation of pediatric pharmacy professionals through mentoring of pharmacy students and post-doctoral training in our robust residency program, which includes post-graduate year one (PGY1) and two (PGY2) residencies in pediatrics and pharmacogenomics. Children's Home Care Pharmacy serves around 200 patients around the metro area. We provide infusion therapies including antibiotics, parenteral nutrition, hydration, immune globulins, factor products and enteral nutrition. We are open Monday through Friday 8 am-5 pm, closed on Holidays, have an on-call team to cover weekends and evenings. We work closely with the Home Care Nursing team to provide safe, efficient and quality care to our patients.
Position Summary
The Pharmacy Technician Specialist advances the mission of the Pharmacy Department by providing a high-quality service resource via unique or specialized pharmacy tasks. They work in a partnership role with Pharmacists and Pharmacy leaders to bring a greater amount of focus to bear on support of mission critical areas where staff are uniquely trained or authorized.
The Pharmacy Technician Specialist carries out technical aspects of safe medication preparation for the treatment of patients under the supervision of a Pharmacist or Specialist. This individual is also responsible for administrative responsibilities for the assigned area, such as pharmacy record keeping and inventory control in collaboration with a Pharmacist or Specialist. Other medication management and patient and family assistance duties will be assigned, according to the specialty area. The Pharmacy Technician Specialist will work jointly with others to conduct audits and analyses in assigned areas of responsibility to ensure compliance and risk mitigation. Findings are reported to pharmacy leadership for gap analysis and process improvement recommendations.

License/Certification/Registration: *Registered Pharmacy Technician in the state of Minnesota (required) *Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) within 1 year of hire (required)
Education: *Associate or higher college graduate degree, or foreign equivalent, or five years of experience in a pharmacy environment or healthcare industry (required)
Experience: *Three years working in a pharmacy environment or a combination of equivalent experience suitable for preparation of the individual to work within the specialized pharmacy service (required) *Experience working within a pharmacy computer system or electronic health record (required) *Leadership experience (preferred)
